A Haven for Writers
September 26th, 2007

I don’t know how many of you know this, but Stephen King is my all-time favorite writer. I’ve learned a lot about writing from him and his books. At least two entire shelves (and more actually) in my bookcase are full of SK’s books.

Anyhoo, he created this foundation called “The Haven Foundation” in 2006 - from the latest press release:

“The Haven Foundation was founded by King to provide financial assistance to writers and artists who, because of an injury or illness, are not able to provide for themselves or their loved ones. The charity offers a wide range of support for artists who make their living on a freelance basis and might not be able to work for a period of time.”

They now have enough money to offer grants to mid-list writers who need financial assistance. He came up with the idea after that awful accident back in 1999 when he was hit by a van and left by the side of the road. Obviously he has deep pockets, but he’s an exception to that rule for writers.

I think this is utterly fantastic and I encourage any writer to make a donation to The Haven Foundation. Here’s their website. Take a minute to read about it and spread the word. They have events, auctions and donation information - there’s even a store where proceeds benefit the foundation.
