Today is Abraham Lincoln’s birthday - did you know that? I think of all the presidents he stands out the most for just about everybody. Not just because of the stovepipe hat or his height. In a time when the US was in such a tumultuous state, he didn’t sit around with his thumb up his butt waiting for something to happen. He either made it happen or handled it when it did.
I imagine that being president during the Civil War was much harder than it is today. For one thing, Abe was really smart, I mean really smart (not like some other presidents over the last 25 years that shall remain nameless - you know who they are). Have you ever read The Gettysburg Address? The man was not only a writer but an orator. He used his intelligence to do what he did best - manage the country in the bloodiest, heart-wrenching period in our history.
Another thing about Abe is the fact that he stayed with his wife. Did you know Mary was probably insane? She was considered by everyone, aside from Abe, to be difficult, touchy and described as a hell-cat. Deep and abiding love there between them - I imagine Abe was a very patient man to have kept his love for his wife over and above everything else.
Apparently the last surviving heir to Lincoln, his great-grandson through his son Robert, died in 1985. Nowadays, politics is all about money and power and charisma, not about intelligence. Take a moment to remember Abe today and thank him for emancipating the slaves and abolishing slavery, for keeping the country together when it was nearly ripped asunder, and for creating a role model for a president that few have achieved.
Happy birthday Abe.
(And happy birthday Arianna Hart!)

If you ask a Canadian to name a few Presidents, Lincoln, Washington, Rosevelt and Kennedy, of course Ronnie Reagan, Nixon, Carter… Bush isn’t one of the big ones, although Bush Jr might be. My son figures they used Monica to hide other things going on with Clinton.
by Dianna Poke February 12th, 2007 at 6:44 pmMary Todd is said to be eccentric, one would get that way after lossing 2 sons and having a husband shot while sitting next to him.
So what do you think of Hillary Rodham Clinton as the next President?
Dianna - after reading the biography, she was a bit wonky all her life, but again, the love was there.
